Story On Memory And Time English Literature Essay

Story On Memory And Time English Literature Essay It is one sunshine afternoon like the other day, my uncle complains to me about how to communicate with his son again. He tells me that he is so busy with his business that his son has always been lived with his grandparent abroad since his son was very young. I feel even more confused when he says that he is not used to spend the time with his son, as he does not know what to say to his son though he is a father. May be you can chat with your son about some interests that your son likes to do very much, such as football, basketball and so on. I tell him. And my memory begins to draft back to the time when I was very young. My parents always believe it is very important for them to spend the time with me no matter how busy they are. Of all the things in the world, time is the most valuable thing that parents can spend on a child. My parents always said that when I was young. They knew what my hobbies are clearly and they are so kind that always tried their best to cultivate my strong points. And it is mainly due to this reason that I am the best football player in my campus. I could not imagine what my course of life would be under the condition that my parents were the same as my uncle, knowing nothing about his child. Well, it is a good idea at the first glance, but I am not familiar with my sons hobbies. May be money can solve everything. You know, I am so successful a manager, hence, I can let my son know how successful his father is by the way of spending money. My uncle answers with confidence, like many parents nowadays, who always believe that it is more useful if they put money onto their children than time. At that moment, my heart is filled with compassion for his son. It is no surprise that his son has no strong points in my school and always spends the time by himself. Being so lonely and so introverted, he even does not know how to make friends with other classmates, never to say social intercourse. I feel am so fortunate than his son, as I have a harmony family, the family of which is vey united and compatible. Living in this family, I learn how to care other people, how to communicate with other people and how to show your friendliness to other people, the characteristics of which I cherish most in my life career. I am convinced that these are the best gifts my parent has given to me. After the conversation with my uncle, looking at the children playing football in the grass lawn not far away, the memories about the time I spend with my parent emerge in my mind. I fall into the precious and memorable recollections. It is no exaggeration to say that I could not have been crazy about playing the football without my fathers cultivation day by day. I remember that my father always comes to the court in my school to watch my football competition. In my memory, when I fail, he always says to me that it is not important of the results, but the process. I have many times of being frustrated; thinking may be I am not the proper person to play football though I love it. It is also my father, a patient and nice father, who gives me encouragements and cheer me up. There is one time that I will have my football competition in the next few days. Unfortunately, my father is too busy with his companies to come. So vital the competition is, I feel nervous and can not focus all my energy on the game, the game of which that I am crazy about. Surprisingly, when the competition begins, I find my father comes to watch my play in one corner of the court, smiling toward me. During that time, full of confidence and thankfulness fills my heart, and I get the golden medal at last. But that competition not merely rewards me that model, it also let me know how miraculous the fathers love to his son is, and how important it is to have the conscious of being able to conquer the impossible. Time will zip by, but memory will be left in your inner heart, especially the precious memories. Those memories about my childhood give me boundless knowledge. Of all the educations in the world, the parents education is significantly important. It is until I grow up that I gradually appreciate my parents influence on me during the period of my childhood. Had it not been for my parents influences, I could not have achieved so many gains not only relating to knowledge but also about social intercourse. It is the memory of my childhood that I cherish most and often hold the opinion that it is the best time in my life. And I am often associated to that period from the things happened in daily life and from what I hear and see when I grow up. Besides that, had it not been for that memory, it would be difficult for me to become an excellent football player in my school. In recent days, I write an article mainly about what is a life, and this title is derived from my childhood, from my father. Whats a life, Dad? Being an innocent child, I was curious about everything in daily life and I always asked my father what the life was when I was a little boy. Life is each day that you take and make most of that. My father always told me like that. Though I could not understand that deep meaning of life, I conceive something relating to life and living. I remember there are many memories about taking each day in my childhood. Fly kites in the field with my father; watch meaningful and moved movies relating to life, to common people with my father; enjoy the natural beauty with my parent when we go out to have a camping; play football with my father and other kids, learning what important in football and in life is the process, not the results. I remember the fondness time my father takes me to go to camp, and that memory always burns brightly in my heart. I l earn a lot from that, especially about how beautiful it is of nature and how meaningful the life is under the condition you put all your heart into it. I learn that simple truth earlier than other children. And these memories always company me when I feel depressed or delighted. Whenever I feel not sure about the life road ahead or become confused about the life and frustrated by trifle things in daily life, I always think about the cheerful memories in my mind, and then I know what the life is and how should I continue my road, how to live happily and meaningfully. It is no exaggeration to say that it is my childhood memory that gives me thoughts about how to write that article. Hence, I write this article, to pursue the significant meaning of life by my past time beautiful memories from my parent. It is my father who teaches me how to pursue life, and gives me inspiration of writing. The memories of spending wonderful time with family in my childhood are so vivid in my memory that I could not keep thinking about them when I am alone. Memory can be compared to flowers, give fragrance to people when they want it; memory can be compared to a mirror, from which you will know what you looks like and how can you make yourself look better and better; memory can be compared to a creation sources, give you inspirations and vision. And in my mind, memory is a reflection and manifestation of my parents love to his child, to me. It is this memory that companies me day and night, making me know how to achieve my dreams and let me know clearly about what is worth my pursuing in my life. Without this memory, I could not write that beautiful essay or being an excellent player in my school. Having this cherishing memory, I will do as my father did when I have my own child in the future; telling him what life is, by using the memories of my childhood. I will surely cultivate his strong points and interests, letting him have the precious memory like mine. A best memory of childhood is the best gift from parents, more valuable and expensive than money or jewelries. Without memory, writers could not write beautiful essays; without memory, children could not have so many fancies; without memory, I could not become good at playing football. Reflective Statement It is universally acknowledged that parents education has significant meaning and the best gift given to children is the time that parents put into, not money, jewelry or other things. Besides that, I have uncountable beautiful memories during childhood from my parent, who teaches me a lot not only about how to be a good person but also about how to explore the meaning of life and how to enjoy life. Therefore, this article is created. It is an article that can give people not only deep thoughts about cherished memories that belonged to their own but also let them know more about the parents influence on children. My memories of my parents cultivating me and playing with me when I was a child always encourage me to overcome difficulties and to be confidence in my daily life. Thanks to those precious memories, I can smile at life on matter it is sunshine or a winding day. And this is another reason which gives me inspiration of creating this work. This work can be used to render people tremendous benefits of how to be imaginable and fancy from their memories as well. It is the memories of wonderful time spending with parents during my childhood time that give me inspiration of creating this work. There are some problems emerged during writing process. For example, it seems to be difficult to describe the unforgettable time of childhood in detail. For the purpose of showing it vividly, I used my imagination and inspiration as well as memory, the memory of which is still burning vividly in my heart. Another problem is that how to arrange the structure of the work, with the purpose of achieving the better results. To achieve better effects, I used a conversation at first paragraph, the conversation of which is to reflect the common problems existed among many parents, who always hold the opinion that money can solve everything, including educating their children. The conversation with my uncle give rises to my own memory of childhood with parent as well. 2) Essay Introduction It is almost impossible to write of the childrens memories of their childhood without mentioning memories of their parents. As is known to all, parents education wield a significant influence in developing childrens practical abilities, cultivating childrens strong points and helping children accomplish educational goals. It is the memories of education and influences from parents that shape childrens life road to a great extent. This essay will firstly discuss the information about techniques and working methods that have been used in the creation of that work. Following this, it will give observations about the creative thinking and writing process of that work. Finally, it will describe the creation and construction of this work. Techniques and working methods being used In the contemporary world, perhaps most of the parents have the illusion that money can render them tremendous help of teaching their children, especially for the busy businessmen. Hence, at the first paragraph, it is a conversation with an uncle. Actually, uncle is a symbol of the parents who knows little on how to educating children, how to play with them and so forth. By comparison, in the first paragraph it also gives my own memories of my childhood and my parents, the purpose of which is to emphasize the theme that time is the best gift parents can give to their children. Another working methods should be mentioned is that in this work, it describes many vivid memories of childhood in detail. It is widely acknowledged by people that elaborate descriptions can better demonstrate the theme. Therefore, memories such as father went to see my football competition no matter how busy he was and how parents cultivated my interests are described vividly. Besides that, these beautiful memories can make people fall into the memories of their own as well. Hence, it can better attract the eyes of readers and achieve their sympathy Last but not least, in that work, it describes myself creating of an article what is life, which is said to be originated from my own memories of parent. For the purpose of putting the work to a meaningful level, I added that description, hoping it can receive the achievements of not only letting readers know how significant it is of parents education but also letting them know the vital role of memory in peoples daily writing and thoughts as it originates from my memory of parent. Good memories can accompany people on their entire life road and give them ray of light whenever they are in the darkness, though the life time zips by quickly. It is the memory of wonderful time which I spent with family that gives me that inspiration and imagination. Observations about the creative thinking and writing process The creative thinking and writing process is mainly reflected in the description of one article that I wrote in that work. I give the name what is life to it, as in my eyes, my parents education of me let me know how to live happily, how to pursue dreams on my life road and what is the meaning of living. It is the best gift and most cherished memory from my parent. Without their cultivation, I could not understand that life is to put your energy into it and enjoy it. From this sense, the writing of this section best exemplifies the creating thinking of mine, as it is the combination of my own memories and my own imaginations as well as my own thoughts about life from my eyesight. Creation and construction of this work In this work, conversation and description are both used, for the purpose of giving people vivid and exactly feeling and to achieve the result of emphasizing the theme of this work. Besides that, memories of my own are mainly used as all these descriptions originated from my own memories of my childhood. It is the basic source of creating this work. In order to emphasize the theory that though time zips by quickly, memories will company people and influence people almost all their lives, a description of imagination was used at the end of that work. That is, when I become a father, I will cultivate my own child like my father did, letting him know the meaning of life and spend as much time as possible with him, which is the best gift that parents can give but always neglect. There are many depictions about the memory itself in this work. It is mainly due to the reason that it is memory that gives me inspiration and imagination. In other words, I could not create this work without the basis of cherished memory. It is that memory which gradually let me understand how luck I am, as I have a harmony family which makes me always smile at life and have my own thoughts when I grow up. Hence, I described memories in details. And this is the mainly reason that I can create this work. When it comes to the reason why I constructed this work, for one part, it is due to the precious memories of my own and my own inspirations originated from those memories. For the other part, it is widely seen that in the contemporary world, most parents do not know how to communicate with their children, making their children lonely and introverted. Hence, it is so meaningful of that work in my mind that I create it. Conclusion In conclusion, good memories can render people tremendous benefits. It is memories of my childhood experience that gives me inspiration to create this work. Besides that, it goes without saying that parents should spend much more high quality time with children, giving them much beautiful memories, which can influence their characters and help them to be more and more confident in the future. And this is the theme of my work as well.

Implementation of Reliable and Cost Effective Smart Home

Implementation of Reliable and Cost Effective Smart Home Automation is the trend that will define the way we will live and work over the next decade. Current home automation systems have limitations in terms of wireless connectivity, speed, interference, bandwidth and cost of implementation. The proposed smart home system provides wireless control of appliances such as lights, fans, and alarms by using sensors and Bluetooth. Bluetooth provides higher transmission speed, greater bandwidth, and consumes less power than existing wireless protocols. Further, the cost of implementation is minimized with the use of sensors and Bluetooth. This design incorporates an ARM7 processor that continuously collects light intensity, temperature, and carbon-monoxide levels from sensors and compares it with threshold levels, to determine the control operation to be performed on home appliances. The ARM7 processor access appliances using Bluetooth. Further, this smart home system also allows individuals to directly control their appliances through a smartpho ne-based android application. This smart home system is implemented and tested under varying conditions to represent its efficiency. LIST OF ABBREVIATIONS ADC Analog to Digital Converter ARM Advanced RISC Machines BLE Bluetooth Low Energy CPSR Current Program Status Register DTE Data Terminal Equipment FEC Forward Error Correction FH-CDMA Frequency Hopping Code Division Multiple Access FIQ Fast Interrupt Request HVAC High Voltage Alternating Current LCD Liquid Crystal Display PPM RISC Parts Per Million Reduced Instruction Set Computer RSSI Received Signal Strength Indicator UART Universal Asynchronous Receiver/Transmitter UPB Universal Powerline Bus USB Universal Serial Bus CHAPTER 1 INTRODUCTION Home Automation Worlds Fair of 1934 in Chicago marked the birth of home automation. Initially, the industry could not make an enormous impact on society. The reason for the slow start was high price and complexity making it hard to install. However as smartphones and tablets came into existence, the implementation of this technology became much easier. The automation technology helps in achieving greater efficiency and provides higher security. Expectations from a Smart Home The major parameters to look for in the implementation of a smart home can be as follows: Compatibility of the protocol. The system should communicate with the major protocols in home automation like ZigBee, Z-Wave, and Bluetooth. Wireless access. The system should be capable of wireless connection such as Wi-Fi Connectivity thereby eliminating all physical complexities. Scope for expansion. The system should support a higher number of products. Scope for scheduling. The design of the system should be able to support scheduling of different tasks at home like turning off lights when nobody at home. Remote access. Having an Android support is imperative these days. If the system is compatible with a smartphone, it makes this process very smooth as almost every individual today has a smartphone. Emergency notification. The system should send messages indicating emergency or threat to the house. Smart Home Community Response Various studies have been conducted to find out if consumers are ready to take up smart home technology. A study from Coldwell Banker Real Estate and CNET carried out in June 2015, said that 28% of internet users in The United States have smart homes and 90% of them would recommend smart home technology. The report also suggests that 25% of Americans use smart home products which save them around 30 minutes a day on average which are equivalent to $1,000 per year. As per a survey, 75% of the smart homeowners believe that this technology brings peace of mind regarding security. CHAPTER 2 REVIEW OF LITERATURE Existing Protocols in Home Automation Industry The increase in the use of smart home systems leads to the development of different protocols. The protocols are selected based on the type of communication among various connected devices. Let us see the major protocols in home automation industry: X10 Technology X10 is the oldest home automation protocol developed in 1970. Initially, the technology was a powerline-based system which slowly went wireless. X10 technology uses the power lines in the home to allow communication between various appliances. X10 is reliable as it makes use of power lines. However, it is subject to interference from other devices in the circuit. It does not provide a speed communication between devices. It can only perform 16 commands sent one at a time. INSTEON Technology INSTEON was introduced in the year 2005. It was designed to bridge the gap between powerline systems and wireless protocols. INSTEON is compatible with X10 technology making it easy for those who have an existing X10 network. It supports automation novices which make setting up or adding devices easy for the non-technical users. INSTEON can support more than 65,000 commands. It is capable of transmitting commands with little interference. One need not have to enroll INSTEON into home automation network. INSTEON network can have more than 400 devices connected in a single installation. The dual-band mesh network can convert all powerline-operated devices into repeaters ZigBee Technology ZigBee is a wireless communication standard built by IEEE. It runs on 802.15.4 wireless communication standard. ZigBee is growing significantly in recent times. However, ZigBees full acceptance as a home automation protocol is still in question. The reason being its interoperability. In most cases, ZigBee devices have difficulty in communicating with devices from other manufacturers. Each device uses different methods to accomplish the same task which causes the difficulty in communication. Perhaps, for the same reason, manufacturers use ZigBee to limit third-party devices. Wi-Fi Technology Wi-Fi stands for Wireless Fidelity. Wi-Fi makes use of radio frequency transmission of data through the air. Speed in a Wi-Fi connection may vary from 1mbps to 2mbps. Wi-Fi works in the frequency band of 2.4 GHz. The range for Wi-Fi is 40-300 feet. Wi-Fi runs on an inbuilt technology known as frequency division multiplexing technology. However, the major drawback with Wi-Fi is the interference and bandwidth issues. With too many Wi-Fi compatible devices, each device must fight for bandwidth resulting in more time to respond thereby making it work slowly. Also, Wi-Fi consumes much power. CHAPTER 3 BLUETOOTH TECHNOLOGY In 1994, Ericsson Mobile Communications was the first to initiate research on the possibility of wireless links. Their aim was to develop a cost-effective solution to replace cables as a mode of communication between computers and peripherals. Ericsson along with Nokia, Intel, IBM, and Toshiba, formed a group known as Bluetooth Special Interest Group (SIG) with a common motive of developing the unique technology. The first Bluetooth technical specification released in 1999. Bluetooth Specification Bluetooth specification for Classic Bluetooth/Bluetooth Basic Rate/Enhanced Data Rate (BR/EDR) is below in Table 1. TABLE 1. Specifications of Classic Bluetooth Technical Specification Classic Bluetooth Modulation Technique Frequency Hopping Modulation Scheme GFSK Modulation Index 0.35 Number of Channels 79 Channel Bandwidth 1 MHz Nominal Data Rate 1-3 Mbps Application Throughput 0.7 2.1 Mbps Nodes/Active Slaves 7 Security 56 128 bit Voice Capable Bluetooth Technology A Good Choice for Smart Home Bluetooth is a solution to some different issues which existed earlier, like: Speed.Bluetooth provides a transmission speed of 1 Mbps. It can handle up to three voice channels simultaneously. Power.Bluetooth technology has a special feature of limiting the transmitters power as per the demand. With the help of a Received Signal Strength Indicator (RSSI), a Bluetooth receiver can determine the transmission power required by the transmitter. Security.Bluetooth has three built-in features which aim at providing secure data or voice transmission Prevents access to transmitted data by providing proper authentication. Data is encrypted over-the-air (OTA) which eliminated eaves-droppings. Also, an appropriate key is required to decrypt such data It makes use of Frequency Hopped Spread Spectrum (FHSS) which further eliminates eavesdropping Reliability.Bluetooth Technology uses three techniques to ensure protocol reliability. They are Frequency Hopping Code Division Multiple Access (FH-CDMA), Error Correction and Received Signal Strength Indicator (RSSI). Therefore, with the help of these techniques, the performance degradation is minimized. CHAPTER 4 SYSTEM COMPONENTS Hardware Components TABLE 2. Advanced RISC Machine (ARM) Processor In 1985, Acorn computers developed the first prototype of ARM in England. ARM stands for Advanced RISC Machine. Currently, ARM is designed and marketed by ARM Holdings. As the name suggests, ARM uses RISC (Reduced Instruction Set Computer) architecture. The design, instruction set and decode mechanism of the RISC is much simpler than Complex Instruction Set Computer (CISC) design. ARM Features ARM7 has the following features: 32-bit RISC processor Low power consumption: 0.6mA/MHz at 3V fabricated Fast interrupt response for real-time applications Fully static operation ideal for power sensitive applications High-performance RISC: 17 MIPS sustained at 25 MHz at 3V In-System Programming/In-Application Programming (ISP/IAP) via on-chip boot- loader software. Single flash sector or full chip erase in 400 ms and programming of 256 bytes in 1ms. Universal Asynchronous Receiver and Transmitter (UART) UART is a chip designed to control all serial devices connected to a processor. The name asynchronous means that UART does not need a predefined clock for synchronization. UART comes with an RS232 Data Terminal Equipment (DTE) which helps to communicate with serial devices. It has a Start bit, seven data bits, a parity bit and a stop bit. UART provides a full duplex transmission which means that data transfer is possible in two ways, simultaneously. Therefore, both the ends have to come to an agreement with the parameters like word length, a parity bit, and some stop bits. Features UART has the following features, Burst rates up to 6 M-bits/second High level of transmission and reception of data UART converts the received bytes into single serial bit stream for transmission Provides buffering of data to maintain the coordination of serial devices with the computer Parity, overrun and framing error detection. Light Dependent Resistor (LDR) Sensor An LDR has a resistance which changes as per the amount of light falling upon it. It is often used to detect the presence of light in a circuit. An LDR has a high resistance of about 1000000 ohms. However, the resistance falls drastically once the bright light falls on it. Characteristics TABLE 4. LDR Characteristics Parameter Conditions Min Type Max Unit Cell Resistance 1000 LUX10 LUX 4009 OhmK Ohm Dark Resistance 1 M Ohm Dark Capacitance 3.5 pF Rise Time 1000 LUX10 LUX 2.818 msms Fall Time 1000 LUX10 LUX 48120 msms Voltage AC/DC Peak 320 V max Current 75 mA max Power Dissipation 100 mW max Operating Temperature -60 +75 Deg. It is she who convinces her husband to allow them to work separately, and it is she who is coerced to eat the fruit that was expressly forbidden by God. John Milton’s view is patriarchal, but involves a contradictory description of Eve as logical, for men at that time did not view women as intelligent. Milton’s demonstration of Eve’s ability to analyze God’s commands with reason and her own judgment emphasizes his opinion that in order to succeed one needs only to have faith in God, which supersedes all intellect, for God is the most knowledgeable being. Adam has the undying faith necessary to remain in Paradise, but Eve obviously does not and is therefore responsible for her sins, and for their banishment.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  In deciding how Adam and Eve will carry out their daily labors, Eve wants to work apart from Adam and to â€Å"divide [their] labours† because   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚     Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  While so near eachother thus all day   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  [Their] task [they] choose, what wonder if so near   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Looks intervene and smiles, or object new   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Casual discourse draw on, which intermits   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  [Their] day’s work brought to little, though begun   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Early, and th’hour of Supper comes unearn’d (ix, 220-224). Eve’s rationalization for working separately from Adam is that she thinks that they will be able to get more work done considering the fact that they will not be distracted by each other. Adam feels protective over Eve and is fearful that the â€Å"malicious Foe/ Envying [their] happiness, and of his own/ Despairing, seeks to work [them] woe and shame/ By sly assault† (ix, 253-256). Adam is taking into careful considerat... ...ton emphasizes a woman’s inability to think without her husband, because when Eve goes off on her own and tries to use â€Å"logic† she sins. The Serpent’s â€Å"words replete with guile/ Into her heart too easy entrance won... and in her ears the sound/ Yet rung of his persuasive words, impregn’d/ With Reason, to her seeming, and with Truth† (ix, 733-738|). Milton is insinuating here that the serpent’s malicious lies seemed like the truth to ignorant and naive Eve. Eating the fruit explicitly forbidden by her creator, she is guilty of the fall of Paradise, despite her obvious intelligence and reasoning. The irony of Milton’s argument is that Eve does have a well functioning brain, but he final judgment is wrong. Women may be intelligent but they are not wise because Eve has sinned against God, and there is no worse act that a Protestant can commit. In order to be successful in life, one must possess wisdom, and it seems that Milton does not place it within Eve’s character, but in Adam’s character, the man. In conclusion, even though a woman can think analytically, she cannot make wise judgements on her own and is susceptible to mistakes and sins, usually brought about by foul temptation. Metro Ethernet :: essays research papers

Metro Ethernet Disclaimer; this is intended to be an introductory technical article; certain details have been excluded in the interests of space and clarity. Network design examples are presented to illustrate specific technical points and are not intended to fully complete. Historically WAN’s (Wide Area Networks) and LAN’s (Local Area Networks) have relied on independent technologies. At a physical layer WAN technologies today continue to be based largely on legacy TDM systems that were built initially to support voice, video and early data communications in a reliable fashion. WAN connectivity over distance often requires the use of regenerators and meet points between multiple Telco suppliers that may span the globe. Without strict adherence to standards, these connections would not function. WAN technologies depend on highly complex and expensive equipment, which can guarantee inter-operability and â€Å"five 9’s† reliability required to support the millions of paying customers utilizing the network. Meanwhile, the advent of early PC’s and the recognition of the value in networking devices together gave rise to Local Area Networks. These LAN’s were developed from a business customer perspective, which placed more emphasis on costs and ease of use over reliability. There were a number of different competing LAN technologies, two of the most common being Token Ring (IBM) and Ethernet (everyone else). The triumph of Ethernet in the marketplace, to the extent where it is included in every PC, game console and some refrigerators, provides a consistent and relatively inexpensive way to build internal networks with relative ease. As the internal PC networks continued to grow and thrive a need to connect disparate facilities together resulted in development of bridges, gateways and ultimately routers for the sole purpose of connecting LANs to other LAN’s located anywhere from several miles to several thousand miles apart. These devices allow disparate interface types to be connected by performing the necessary modifications to the signal and protocols to allow WAN and LAN equipment to understand one another. Because LAN Ethernet and WAN TDM networks were so vastly different in their technical make-up these intermediary devices were needed to allow inter-communication to occur. While the benefits of enterprise connectivity are great, they come at the cost of special hardware, software and application complexity as the speed of the network can change by a factor of 100 between a client and the server (100 Meg bit per second Ethernet to 1.5 Meg bit per second WAN).

Occupational Therapy Philosophy

* ————————————————- Occupational Therapy: Integrating Art and Science * ————————————————- * ————————————————- What is occupational therapy? How does one define the profession and validate its worth in the medical field? Since its conception as an established health care profession, occupational therapy’s philosophy has been defined, redefined, and refined. In their writings esteemed Occupational Therapists Mary Reilly and Susan Peloquin offer their own critical and revisionary ideas of occupational therapy’s worth, the basic need it fulfills, and its service to the healthcare profession. Both women ask their peers to refine what is uniquely inherent about occupational therapy and by doing so validate the profession’s contribution in serving the needs of man (Reilly, 1963; Peloquin,2002). * ————————————————-In her 1962 Eleanor Clarke Slagle address entitled, â€Å"Occupational Therapy Can Be One Of The Great Ideas of 20th Century Medicine† Mary Reilly (1962) challenges her fellow colleagues to critically define Occupational Therapy’s value within the medical field. She initiates this critique by first asking the provocative question, â€Å"Is Occupational Therapy a sufficiently vital and unique service for medicine to support and society to reward† (Reilly,1962, p. 3)?Reilly suggests it is precisely these critical questions and line of discourse that we as practitioners need to be embracing to maintain our unique and vital contribution to the healthcare realm. * ——â₠¬â€Ã¢â‚¬â€Ã¢â‚¬â€Ã¢â‚¬â€Ã¢â‚¬â€Ã¢â‚¬â€Ã¢â‚¬â€Ã¢â‚¬â€Ã¢â‚¬â€Ã¢â‚¬â€Ã¢â‚¬â€Ã¢â‚¬â€Ã¢â‚¬â€Ã¢â‚¬â€- Drawing inspiration from Occupational therapy’s earliest visions Suzanne M. Peloquin also seeks to engage her audience by asking to consider and reflect upon a different but equally important component that makes occupational therapy unique and vital to the health of man.Quoting Ora Ruggles,an early contributor to the field of occupational therapy, Peloquin writes, â€Å"It is not enough to give a patient something to do with his hands. You must reach for the heart as well as the hands. It’s the heart that really does the healing† (Peloquin,2002). Through the use of visual imagery and storytelling Peloquin calls our attention to the profession’s earliest founders and their visionary beliefs. Peloquin eloquently reminds us of the healing power of the heart and the vital aspect of caring that is inherent and necessary in our profession. —â₠¬â€Ã¢â‚¬â€Ã¢â‚¬â€Ã¢â‚¬â€Ã¢â‚¬â€Ã¢â‚¬â€Ã¢â‚¬â€Ã¢â‚¬â€Ã¢â‚¬â€Ã¢â‚¬â€Ã¢â‚¬â€Ã¢â‚¬â€Ã¢â‚¬â€Ã¢â‚¬â€Ã¢â‚¬â€- Furthermore, Peloquin maintains that when we undertake an integrative approach employing both â€Å"competency and caring† in healing we solidify our value as a profession (Peloquin 2012). She demonstrates this when she writes, â€Å"Three constructs deeply rooted in our profession’s culture and integral to its central character are well-presented in the early vision: integration, occupation, and caring†(Peloquin,1962,p. 525).In contrast, Reilly engages her audience by putting forth a mandate that charges the practitioners of occupational therapy to validate the profession by inviting and seeking critical appraisal. â€Å" When a professional organization as a whole accepts criticism as the dominating mode of thought, then indeed, theorizing flourishes and the intellectual atmosphere of their gatherings, is characterized by sweeping controversie s. In this atmosphere of controversy, progress becomes somewhat assured† (Reilly, 1962, p. 3). * ————————————————-In addition to engaging in critical debate Reilly believes that in order to establish credibility and worth, Occupational Therapy must strive to identify and define â€Å"the vital need of man which we serve and the manner in which we serve it†(Reilly p. 3). In this academic and investigative tone, Reilly delivers her lecture in a clear and orderly fashion. Her writing is concise and articulate as she methodically introduces an hypothesis in which postulates â€Å"That man, through the use of his hands, as they are energized by mind and will, can influence the state of his own health† (Reilly,1962,p. ). She formulates this theory and tests it by drawing upon a multi-discipline approach to research (Reilly, 1962). She charges her colleagues w ith the mandate to define man’s basic need for occupation in a scientific researchable manner and atmosphere. It is not enough to draw upon multiple disciplines such as the social sciences, biology, and neurophysiology, Reilly suggests we must also observe the anthropological , social, and biological study of occupation through â€Å"phylogenetic and ontogenetic† lenses Reilly,1962,p. 10) . Through this study of occupation and the therapeutic meaning of work Reilly defines a unique aspect of occupational therapy: â€Å"the profound understanding of the nature of work† (Reilly,1962,p. 9). Her thesis in this thought provoking address, her take home message, is so powerful that Peloquin describes Reilly’s hypothesis of human occupation as â€Å"one of the profession's best visionary statements†(Peloquin,1962,p. 518). * ————————————————-In co ntrast to Mary Reilly’s urging to attain a scientific understanding of man’s basic need for occupation, Peloquin’s reminiscent recalling of early visions of occupational therapy’s goals and unique attributes highlights the profession philosophy of meaningful and purposeful work in a client-centered modality of care. Incorporating the art of caring in our treatment paired with the extensive wealth of knowledge gleaned across multiple disciplines enables us as practitioners to guide the patient toward the occupation of living or as Peloquin puts it â€Å"allow us to see individuals occupying their lives† and â€Å"living well† (Peloquin,2002,p. 24). * ————————————————- Reilly also strongly embraces an integrated approach and outlines the importance of maintaining a individual or client-centered approach when assigning treatment. Her abhorrence of formulaic activity groups prescribed as therapy used in psychiatric settings in the 1960’s is detailed best when she writes, â€Å"activity programs so designed, tend to depersonalize, institutionalize and, in general, debase human nature† (Reilly,1962,p. 12). * ————————————————-In their vastly different writings, different in style, in delivery and different in focus, these women have a common concern, passion, and desire for the preservation of occupational therapy. Mary Reilly aims to mark the profession as vital by focusing our attention to the distinctive quality that occupational therapy holds: the unique speciality of defining the value ofâ€Å"work† to man. (Reilly, 1962). It is this concept and the critical engagement from which great ideas such as this stems, are necessary in ensuring a professional organization’s existenc e in these dynamic and emanding times. Suzanne Peloquin also believes that occupational therapy’s attributes are unique and standout from others in the healthcare field. The uniqueness that Peloquin refers to and asks her readers to preserve and incorporate in our practice is the founding member’s early vision of caring and empathy. She writes, â€Å"To see hearts engaged is to see personal actualization, an occupational link with identity, a making of meaning. The depiction transcends more limited visions of activity or productivity and allow us to see individuals occupying their lives†(Peloquin,1962,p524). * ————————————————- In an attempt to integrate Peloquin’s vision and Reilly’s hypothesis I refer to Peloquin’s remark, â€Å"Occupational therapy is not about balancing at some midpoint between two dimensions of practice, with either heart or hands getting about half of a practitioner's attention; it is about reaching for both† (Peloquin,1962,p. 522).Reilly collaborates this sentiment writing, â€Å"And more than all this, it implies that man, through the use of his hands, can creatively deploy his thinking, feelings and purpose to make himself at home in the world and to make the world his home† (Reilly,1962,p. 2). It is precisely this distinctive blending of visionary statements and scientific exploration that lends occupational its unique * ————————————————- vitality and credibility. Leaders in the field such as Peloquin, and Reilly inspire, shape and preserve the richness and dignity of the important dynamic nature of our field.

How does conan doyle use setting in the hound of the baskervilles? Essay

The novel ‘Hound of the Baskervilles’ is a murder mystery novel based on an ancient legend of a ghostly dog that’s haunting one family. It is thought to be something supernatural that gives the book a sinister atmosphere created well by the author. The book was published as a serial in 1901 and went on to be extremely successful. The author uses plenty of contrast in the description of the inside of Baskerville Hall, but it still comes across as sinister ‘my word it isn’t a very cheerful place’ is Sir Henry’s initial reaction to it. Conan Doyle creates atmosphere in the mansion by using objects ‘The door clanged heavily behind us’ clanging heavy doors gives the impression of a haunted mansion, and also shows that it is silent enough in the mansion to hear it loudly, another example of an object creating atmosphere ‘numerous candles did something to remove the sombre impression’ saying that the house is scary, but the decoration is uplifting. ‘Long shadows trailed down the walls and hung like a black canopy’ ‘like a black canopy’ is a simile, this use of imagery really adds to the effect of indirect eeriness. It gets described also as a ‘fine apartment’ showing that it is scary because of what it is thought to represent (the curse of the Baskervilles) but it is actually a lovely house. The thing that really makes the mansion scary is the fact that the author does not describe it as a big run down haunted mansion, it is actually a very nice house but with a dark and eerie atmosphere because of the past and the authors subtle comments make it seem scarier such as ‘a dull light shone through heavy mullioned windows’ because there is nothing specifically sinister about the description, it is just not positive as it is not a bright light, and the heavy windows give the impression of a sort of jail or church which gives the effect of a dark, claustrophobic atmosphere. The descriptions of the outside of Baskerville hall the author makes are nothing but negative such as ‘The house glimmered like a ghost at the end’ this is a simile and it is scary as the thought of a house glimmering gives a dominating feel, as it seems like everything else is dark, and they can just see the lit up house at the end and the use of the word ‘ghost’ gives a supernatural feel which gives the reader a fear of the unknown. Sir Henry says ‘there is no wonder my uncle felt that trouble was coming’ which shows that his first impression from the outside is frightening. He describes ‘weather bitten pillars’ which shows that they do not get great weather down there and that the pillars must have been there for a while, therefore showing the house is old and most typical haunted houses are old. The journey up to the mansion a number of scary encounters occur such as ‘Trees shot their branches in a sombre tunnel above our heads’ the word sombre means gloomy or dark so it is saying that it is dimly lit under the trees. The bad weathering outside the house is shown in descriptions like ‘A ruin of black granite’ this is saying that it is ancient as you associate ruins with ancient landmarks. Another example of Conan Doyle using weathering is ‘Broken fringe of rocks’ this says that they are broken, and as a result look unattractive and unwelcoming. Conan Doyle uses sounds to add effect such as ‘A rustle of ivy on the wall’ this shows that the wind is blowing, and ivy is a plant that consumes the house. The moor is what the story is mostly based around; it is portrayed as a sad, deserted place which is shown when Conan Doyle describes it as ‘Grey, melancholy hill, with a strange jagged summit’ grey is a bland, cold and sad colour, and melancholy means depressed. The author also describes it as ‘Forbidding moor’ this is threatening as not only is it scary as it is, forbidding makes it seem like they are not allowed there. The author normally does the moor scenes when it is dark which creates suspense as bad things typically happen at night, he often uses the moon to express that it is night time for example ‘His eyes shining brightly in the moonlight’ the moonlight is reflecting off of his eyes which makes it mysterious and also ‘The moon shone on it and it looked like a great shimmering ice field’ this is a simile, and ice is cold, which makes it scarier and it is as if everything else is out of sight other than the moonlit moor. Another example of Conan Doyle trying to show it is night time is ‘Emerged into the clear, star-lit night’ which sets the scene and the word emerged is scary because he has appeared out of the thick fog, but they do not know what else is among it, something dangerous may not be able to be seen. ‘Bronzing bracken and mottled brambles gleamed in the light of the sinking sun’ the sun is setting representing loss of light and night approaching therefore something terrifying is more likely to happen. ‘Behind the peaceful and sunlit countryside’ the sunlit area is described as peaceful as light is not a typical setting for eeriness. ‘The gloomy curve of the moor, broken by the jagged and sinister hills’ gloomy, jagged and sinister are all negative words. The moor however is not just eerie at night as it is just on the whole which the author clearly tries to make a point of ‘after these autumn rains it is an awful place’ this makes the moor seem horrible as rain is disgusting weather and this shows the moor will be marshy. ‘A dreadful cry echoed over the moor’ the fact that the cry echoes shows that the moor is a wide-open space as sound travels further in empty areas, the fact that the moor also has the mysterious and sinister grimpen mire in it makes it seem like it has a more supernatural side to it, the description ‘Houses of these forgotten folk; with their graves and huge monoliths’ shows that death is in the moor because of the gravestones and empty houses and also shows desertion. So all in all, the surroundings that the author chose for the novel has many elements that encourage fear in the reader; the open spaces, the fog on the moor, the time of day he uses for the events in the story for example; night and sunset are both associated with bad goings on. The reader immediately connects these times of day with frightening things. In the novel the author describes objects and the scenery in such a way that they are representative of fearful images. The setting is mostly scary throughout but not too obviously otherwise it would lessen the effect Conan Doyle has made which is of subtle horror, sometimes the scenery is described as pleasant to make you feel as though the place is not scary but a supernatural going on, like a haunting is happening. All of these factors contribute to the atmosphere that he greatly creates.
